Summer 2005 saw the Harbron family hit
the road in search of some "Little
House on the Prairie" sites. My wife
and eldest two daughters are big fans
of both the TV show and the books.
If you're not too familiar with
"Little House" you might not know that
the TV show was based upon the largely
auto-biographical books written by
pioneer girl Laura Ingalls Wilder.

We visited two sites where Laura and
her family lived in the 19th century.
The first was Walnut Grove in south-
western Minnesota. In the town,
several buildings in a large fenced-in
lot make up the Laura Ingalls Wilder
Museum.
Different buildings are used to
showcase different aspects of pioneer
life.

Grandma's House

A settler's house was very small. If
you look closely, you will see a
"trundle bed" which extends out from
under the real bed. While the men
scratched a living out of the land,
the women spun their own thread on the
spinning wheel and weaved their own
cloth.

The community revolved around the
church. Often, the clergyman would be
a "circuit rider," traveling to
various towns and settlements on
horseback. While there, the parson
would preach, baptize babies and new
believers, and perform memorial
services for those who had died.

We homeschool our children, so my wife
felt right at home giving a quick
geography lesson to our kids in the
one-room schoolhouse.

Metal stoves were used for heating and
cooking. If wood or coal were not
available, settlers burned corn, knots
of grass, or even "cow chips."
